Enterprises are rapidly adopting generative AI, but many underestimate the risks. Experts warn that by 2027, over 40% of breaches could stem from misused AI tools, unless organisations proactively manage prompt injection, data leakage, and AI-driven attack vectors.

Enterprises have embraced generative AI at unprecedented speed, with over 40% already weaving tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini into workflows. Yet adoption is often driven by efficiency goals rather than security assessments, creating blind spots that adversaries are quick to exploit.

Common risks include prompt injection, where attackers manipulate models into executing unintended actions, and inadvertent data leakage, where sensitive corporate information is entered into AI systems and resurfaced later. Because most traditional security solutions are not designed to detect adversarial instructions, many organisations remain unaware that their AI deployments are vulnerable.

Analysts predict that by 2027, more than 40% of security incidents could be linked directly to misuse or exploitation of generative AI. The concern is not limited to direct attacks: adversaries are also leveraging AI to enhance phishing, reconnaissance, and malware development, further raising the stakes for defenders.

For penetration testers and consultants, this shifts the scope of engagements. Assessments now need to evaluate AI integrations alongside traditional application layers, probing for resilience against crafted inputs, injection scenarios, and unsafe integrations with internal systems. Red teams must also anticipate how attackers could automate their campaigns with AI, scaling at levels previously unthinkable.

Mitigations involve context isolation, monitoring for anomalous AI activity, and developing clear corporate policies for AI usage. Employee awareness is critical—staff must understand what data should and should not be entered into generative models. Organisations that adopt AI without embedding security considerations risk creating hidden liabilities that only surface during a breach.

The underlying message is clear: treating AI as a simple productivity booster underestimates its dual-use nature. Enterprises must adopt a security-first mindset, recognising that the same tools accelerating innovation can equally accelerate compromise if left unchecked.
